Downing: Liverpool must shoot to kill

Liverpool must develop ruthlessness to kick opponents when they're down if they want to win titles.
That is the brutally honest assessment of their own players, after yet another impressive weekend performance that almost became another tale of frustration and missed opportunity.
On too many occasions this season, the Reds have created enough chances to tie up games well before the end, only for their carelessness in front of goal to allow the opposition an unlikely route back.
That almost happened again on Saturday, when QPR got battered but almost miraculously found themselves trailing by just a single goal late in the game, and then missed a glorious chance to snatch a point.
Despite playing as well as any side in the Premier League - as their recent display against leaders Manchester City proved - Liverpool haven't scored more than two goals in a game since August.
Winger Stewart Downing, who concedes he is as guilty as anyone when it comes to poor finishing, says he and his team-mates must discover a ruthless streak to bring the victories their form deserves.
"Our performances have been very good this season, and we have created plenty of chances, but the biggest issue so far is we haven't converted enough," admitted the England star.
"We haven't scored enough goals and that means we haven't killed teams off. We all know we have to finish them off when you get those sort of chances, because if you don't they invariably punish you at this level.
"Hands up, if we'd taken more of our opportunities this season then we'd be in a much better position, and we all know that."
