Liverpool boss Kenny Dalglish is planning a double transfer-window swoop on the Bundesliga.
The Reds have lined up Werder Bremen winger Marko Marin and Borussia Dortmund striker
Luca Barrios.
Anfield director of football Damien Comolli identified Marin – German, but of Serbian descent – more than a year ago and Liverpool are understood to have failed in a bid to sign the winger last summer.
Talent
Now they are trying to revive the a deal for a fee of around £12million but time is running out before the window closes on Tuesday night.
Marin, 22, played twice for Germany during the 2010 World Cup in South Africa and is regarded as a promising young talent.
Tottenham are also understood to be keeping tabs on Marin but it is thought Liverpool are ahead of them in the race.

Furious Dalglish threatens to axe Liverpool flops
BOLTON, United Kingdom: Furious Liverpool boss Kenny Dalglish threatened to wield the Anfield axe after accusing players of failing to represent the club properly in Saturday’s shock 3-1 defeat at Bolton.
While victory in that game would put Liverpool on the brink of their first trophy since winning the 2006 FA Cup, an even more high-profile cup tie awaits on Saturday.
United visit Anfield in the fourth round of the FA Cup for the first meeting between the two bitter rivals since the much-publicised race row which ended with Luis Suarez being handed an eight-match suspension.
However, despite the importance of those games, Dalglish was in no mood to forgive his players for failing to perform against a Bolton side with the worst home record in English football.
“The most disappointing thing for me is I don’t think we were ready to play the game,” said Dalglish.
Furious Kenny Dalglish threatened to get rid of his under-performing Liverpool stars after they suffered a humiliating defeat at Bolton.
The manager was enraged by his team’s under-par performance and ripped into them after the game for their disrespectful attitude. ‘They will not be here for
much longer if that is the way they perform,’ said Dalglish.

Liverpool target LAZAR MARKOVIC
One of the best young talents emerging on the European stage. Markovic has all the hallmarks of a young Michael Owen.
He is fast, skilful and direct. Most importantly he also knows where the goal is.
Markovic expressed a desire to join Chelsea and they have certainly shown interest but they need a striker who can come in now with pressure increasing on Andre Villas-Boas.
That has allowed Liverpool to step into negotiations and they will look to wrap up a deal.
However, the price will be around £8million and the deal is more likely to be agreed now but put on ice until the summer.
Markovic only made his debut last May but has scored six goals in 16 games this season and is on the brink of a national team call-up.

Liverpool to step up striker push
Liverpool may well step up their interest in Newcastle's Demba Ba after it was revealed his release clause was less than £10m.
Even at £10m Liverpool were one of the club's interested in taking the striker who has netted 15 times already this season, but at around half that figure almost every club in the Premier League will be on his trail.
The Reds have been strongly linked with Aston Villa's Darren Bent as they look to improve in front of goal but with Ba available for a knockdown fee they are more likely to move for him.
Tottenham boss Harry Redknapp revealed the clause for Ba to leave Newcastle could be half of the £10m suggested, when asked about the £10m clause for the former West Ham ace, Redknapp said: "I think you will find it is a lot less than that."
Asked if was as little as £7m, Redknapp added: "Even less than that."

Liverpool set to Swoop for £15m Croatian International Striker
Liverpool manager Kenny Dalglish will be on red alert after the latest comments to come from Rangers striker Nikica Jelavic with regards to his Ibrox future.
The Kop boss is eager to bring in a new striker as Dirk Kuyt is expected to leave Anifield during the course of the January transfer window whilst Liverpool will also be without Luis Suarez for eight games.
However it is Liverpool that attracts the Croatian international the most: "Of course I am flattered about Liverpool, but I do not know how much truth there is," Jelavic told the Daily Mail.
"Therefore, I don't pay attention because I do not want to create additional pressure. My job is to play.
"Liverpool is a great name but, like I say, the question is how much are they really interested?"

Can the Reds shock the Manchester City like Sunderland?
Last season City put three past Liverpool in a convincing display at home. The Reds repaid the favour at Anfield and honours were even when they met in November. However, Liverpool enter the game with a rejuvenated Steven Gerrard in their side. The Liverpool captain came on for 30 minutes against Newcastle and changed the game. He looked sharp, fresh, fit and hungry. The Reds have their eyes on Champions League football and if that means helping their old enemy reclaim top spot for the time being then so be it. They need the points and a win here would give everyone at Anfield a real confidence boost.Games between these two can be tight and tense affairs - four of the last six meetings have ended in a draw - but City will be desperate to find the back of the net again, as will Gerrard and Andy Carroll. In Joe Hart and Pepe Reina, two of the Premier League's top goalkeepers will be on show, but who will come out on top?My prediction 2-1 for Liverpool

Liverpool plan Darren Bent raid
Liverpool are planning a shock raid for England and Aston Villa striker Darren Bent in the January transfer window. Kenny Dalglish will test Villa's resolve with a £24million bid in the coming weeks as the Anfield boss looks to add firepower for the second half of the season. The move would give Bent the chance to reunite with former Villa team-mate Stewart Downing and would boost his England chances, too, according to the Sunday Mirror.
